Rise Up, Joe Hill!

From As a Director, Clinton Moved Wal-Mart Board, but Only So Far in today's NY Times:
...a prominent management lawyer who has helped stop union drives at many major companies, said he worked closely with Mr. Walton to convince workers that a union would be bad for the company, personally telling employees when he visited stores that “the only people who need unions are those who do not work hard.”
Tell that to the coal miners and auto workers!

I'm a white-collar professional (which is a curious phrase, considering how long it's been since I've seen a coworker wearing a white shirt, but anyway), and that divide-and-conquer tactic has worked well with us for decades.

In our case, the emphasis is on "professional." It makes us feel that we're above those lower level types who belong to unions.
